Your first 90 days in a clinical-research role

    4 min read · 2026-05-14

How to ramp up, build credibility, and avoid the common rookie mistakes.

    Weeks 1-2: learn the SOPs

Read every relevant SOP front to back. Take notes. The fastest way to lose credibility early is to ask questions whose answers are in the SOP.

    Weeks 3-6: shadow everything

Sit in on visits, monitoring calls, regulatory submissions. The job is mostly pattern-matching — you can't pattern-match without seeing the patterns.

    Weeks 7-12: own a small thing end-to-end

Volunteer to take a single workflow off your supervisor's plate (a binder, a sub-section of a visit, monthly metrics). Owning something small > shadowing everything.
