CRC vs CRA: which path should you start on?
5 min read · 2026-05-14
Two of the most common clinical-research career tracks — what's actually different, and which one fits you.
The short version
CRCs work at a site, with patients, on a small number of trials. CRAs work for a sponsor or CRO, monitor multiple sites, and travel.
Most people start as a CRC and move into CRA after 1-2 years. Going straight into CRA is possible but rare.
Which one suits you?
Pick CRC if: you want to work with patients, prefer a stable single-site routine, and are starting out.
Pick CRA if: you're comfortable traveling, like data-quality work, and want a higher-paid trajectory faster.
