A Phase II trial looks for the first evidence that a treatment actually works, while continuing to study safety and dose. It involves patients with the target condition, typically in the low hundreds. Many treatments stop here, because Phase II is where a promising idea most often fails to show an effect.
Example
A Phase II trial of an asthma drug tests two doses against placebo in 200 patients to see whether lung function improves and which dose to carry forward.
