A participant is a person who takes part in a clinical trial, whether receiving the investigational product or a comparator. Older regulatory texts say "subject", and the two terms mean the same thing, but "participant" is now generally preferred because it reflects an active, voluntary role. Participants are identified in trial records by a code, not by name.
