A vulnerable population is a group whose ability to give free, fully informed consent may be limited — for example children, people who cannot consent for themselves, prisoners, or people who might feel pressured by their circumstances. Trials involving them need extra safeguards and closer ethical review. That can mean consent from a legal representative, assent from the participant, and independent oversight of recruitment.
