Research fraud is the deliberate fabrication, falsification, or suppression of trial data or records. It is different from an honest error, and it is rare, but it is the reason audit trails, source verification, and central data review exist. Suspected fraud must be escalated immediately through the sponsor and the institution rather than handled locally.
