An adaptive design allows pre-planned changes to a trial based on data gathered while it runs — for example dropping a dose, re-estimating the sample size, or stopping early. The rules for adapting are specified and agreed in advance, which is what keeps the results valid. Making the same changes without pre-planning would undermine the trial.
