A protocol amendment is a formal, documented change to an approved protocol. Substantial amendments, those that could affect participant safety or the reliability of the results, normally need ethics committee and regulatory approval before they take effect. Sites must not implement a change until the required approvals are in place, except to remove an immediate hazard.
