Clinical equipoise is genuine uncertainty within the expert community about which of the treatments being compared is better. It is the ethical justification for randomizing participants: if everyone already knew one arm was superior, it would be wrong to assign anyone to the other. Losing equipoise during a trial — for example after an interim analysis — can be a reason to stop it.
